2017-18 School Year                                                                                                  Syllabus and Expectations



Students MUST bring the following supplies EVERY DAY:

  • Composition Notebook (100 pages, NO spiral/wire)
  • Writing Utensil (Pen or Pencil)

All other necessary supplies will be supplied by the teacher. However, students may wish to have access to the following supplies of their own:

  • Colored Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Glue Sticks or Tape
  • Scissors
  • Notebook Paper and/or Graph Paper

Textbook/IAN Notebook:

Students will be issued an online code for Pearson Realize, where the Algebra 1 Textbook and other online learning tools will be accessible with an electronic device using the Internet.

Students will be creating their own textbook over the course of the school year in a composition notebook. This notebook will feature typed and handwritten notes, example problems, foldables, interactive study tools, and anything else students may want to reference later. Many of the notes we take will require cutting, gluing, coloring, and sorting. These activities are designed to engage students in the learning process. In this classroom, math is learned by doing, not by watching. It is crucial that students bring their notebook to class daily. Students will be permitted to use their notebooks on all quizzes. Therefore, it is in the students’ best interest to take notes that are neat, organized, and easily referenced.

Notebooks will be checked monthly for completeness.

Rules and Consequences:

Algebra 1 students are expected to

1)            Come prepared to learn;

2)            Refrain from distracting other students auditorily or visually during instruction;

3)            Be respectful and correctable;

4)            Participate during instruction; and

5)            Stay on task during class work or cooperative learning activities.

In addition, students should of course follow the CMA and DPSCD student code of conduct at all times.

Consequences range from verbal warning, phone calls home, and classroom detention to administrative referral for severe or repeated infractions.

Cellular Devices

Per CMA policy, no cell phones or electronic devices are permitted in classrooms or hallways. If a student is caught in the possession of a cell phone or device during class (unless explicitly authorized by the teacher), the cell phone will be confiscated, labeled, secured, and delivered to the office.

Hall Pass Policy:

Per CMA policy, no hall passes will be issued during class for any reason. Should a student have an unauthorized absence from class, reentry will not be permitted without a pass with a signature and date/time.

School and District Rules:

I enforce all CMA and DPSCD rules already in place, without exception. These rules include (but are not limited to):

  • No cell phones or other electronic devices except where used for educational purposes expressly approved by me.
  • No food or drink anywhere other than the cafeteria.
  • No backpacks, bags, or purses larger than 8” X 11” permitted in the classroom.
  • Be in uniform.

The best way to learn a new skill is by practicing it. Therefore, students will be assigned practice problems daily. Homework can be found at


Sustained Silent Reading happens every Wednesday. You must bring your own book to read. The second “S” stands for silent. That means there is no talking during this time. Points are deducted for talking/making noise during SSR. Students will read silently for at least 10 minutes, then write a short summary of what was read.


Wednesday is Quiz Day. Students will be required to take at least one quiz per learning target. Each quiz correlates to a type of question that may be asked on the end-of-quarter final exam. These quizzes will rarely be multiple choice. Students will be permitted to use their IAN notebook on all quizzes. Algebra 1 students will be required to demonstrate mastery of 75 learning targets.

Re-take Policy:

Students are required to re‑take each quiz until they earn a score of A, B, or C. Students may retake quizzes on Wednesdays, and also before school, during 7th hour records room, or at another time by appointment.

In order to be eligible to retake a quiz, students must properly complete an application to re‑quiz, which includes additional practice on the given topic.

Retake quizzes will follow the same format as the original quiz, but the problems will be slightly different.

Students may retake a quiz as many times as they need to demonstrate mastery; however, may not retake a single quiz more than once per day. For example, a student could come in after school and retake quizzes 5 and 7. However, a student could not come in after school and take quiz 5, have it graded, and then immediately retake quiz 5 again.

There is a two-week deadline for completing a re‑quiz application and re‑taking a quiz. If a student has not done so within the two-week time frame, and has not had a conversation with me about it, the NOT YET grade will remain a 0-point score in the grade book.

Quiz Grading System:

All weekly quizzes will be graded on a mastery system. Returned quizzes will only include the score of A, B, C or NOT YET. It will be the student’s responsibility to determine which questions they missed and why they missed them. If they cannot figure this out, they can get help from the teacher or another student.

Students will earn an A on a quiz if they complete each question accurately, follow all of the directions, and show all of their thinking. Students who do not show all of their thinking will automatically be required to retake the quiz. “A Quizzes” will be entered in the gradebook as 60/60 points. Once a student earns an A on a quiz, he or she is considered to have mastered that concept.

Students will earn a B or a C on a quiz if they show understanding of the concept but make one or more minor errors in the process. “B Quizzes” will be entered in the gradebook as 50/60 points and “C Quizzes” will be entered in the gradebook as 42/60 points. Once a student earns a B or C on a quiz, he or she is considered to have mastered that concept. However, students may choose to retake the quiz if they wish to try to earn an A.

Students will earn a NOT YET on a quiz if they fail to show understanding of a concept by making a major error. Remember – failure to show all of your thinking will result in earning a NOT YET. “NOT YET Quizzes” will be entered in the gradebook as 0 points.

Class Grade:

Students have the opportunity to earn 1000 points each quarterly marking period. Throughout the course of the marking period, letter grades or percentages will not be posted in the teacher gradebook. Instead, students will see points accumulated so far out of 1000.

At the end of each marking period, the final letter grade will be reflected as follows:

0-599 points                   F – no credit

600-699 points               D

700-799 points               C

800-899 points               B

900-1000 points            A

Students are required to keep track of their own points accumulated using a score tracking sheet to glued into their IAN notebooks. Points will also be viewable in the online gradebook. Students are encouraged to periodically check their accumulated points online to make sure an incorrect grade has not been entered by mistake.

Password is in the form fL000001 OR fL000002 where the f=first initial (lower case), L=last initial (upper case), 0000=the month and year of student’s birth, and the last two numbers are 01 for a male or 02 for a female.

Grading Scale:

Students’ final grades are calculated out of 1000 points using the CMA school-wide grading scale, as follows:

Class Work (Interactive Notebook): 350 points (35%)

Quizzes: 300 points (30%)

Homework: 100 points (10%)

Do Now and SSR: 50 points (5%)

Class Participation: 50 points (5%)

Final Exam: 150 points (15%)

How to Succeed:

  • Use your 55 minutes in class to learn, not to socialize.
  • Plan on spending 20-60 minutes per day outside of class.
  • Check daily and make sure all class work and homework is completed daily.
  • Seek help as soon as you do not understand.
  • Keep asking for help until you do understand. Do not give up.
  • Come to class. If an occasional absence is unavoidable, come to tutoring the very next day you return to school.

Getting Help or Clarification:

  • I am available from 2:30 – 2:55 p.m. every day.
  • I can stay after school by appointment (3 p.m. to 4 p.m.) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
  • The homework and class work are posted daily on the class website
  • I can be emailed or texted ( / 248-238-4007 (text message only, no voice).
  • If a student has a concern that cannot be addressed during regular instruction time, he or she is more than welcome to stay to talk after class or see me at 2:30, or write me a note or email/text.

Occasionally students like to have their photographs or videos taken connected with a special project or work they are proud of. Algebra 1                                       Behavior Expectations




  • Bring at least two (2) functioning writing utensils


  • Bring your IAN notebook


  • Keep a planner or calendar and record all due dates and important assignments


  • Bring whatever other supplies you personally find necessary to stay organized and on-task


  • Be in your seat working on your Do Now activity BEFORE the tardy bell rings
  • Finish your class work and do your homework the night before, and check your answers prior to arriving at class. That way, you can ask questions in the first part of class about homework problems you couldn’t get correct.
  • If there is to be a lecture on a topic, read that topic in the textbook the night before and take notes. Come prepared to get the questions raised by the reading answered.
  • Study for your tests and quizzes. That means complete your practice problems over and over until you are sure you can do them correctly. It also means make sure you have learned all your vocabulary words.




  1. Do Not Be Auditorily Distracting (making noise)


  • Do not talk when the teacher is talking, even about something legitimate, such as the math lesson


  • If you have a question about the lesson, do not talk when the teacher is talking to ask a neighbor. Instead, either raise your hand and ask your question (because others may have the same question) or jot yourself a note to ask it later.


  • If you raise your hand and ask me to, I will slow down or repeat what I’ve said. If you, rather, lean over and ask a neighbor, now both of you will miss what I say next and become more confused.


  • Do not make any noises during instruction. I, as well as some of my students, am easily distracted by random noises such as pencil tapping, gum popping, humming, etc. Please be considerate when the teacher is talking or when a classroom discussion is happening, and refrain from making noise.


  1. Do Not Be Visually Distracting (movements)


  • Stay in your seat during instruction (when the teacher is talking, or when the class is having a whole-group discussion)


  • Do not throw anything, ever, including paper at the trash can. If you have garbage, keep it at your desk, and throw it away on your way out the door when you are dismissed


  • Keep your hands to yourself; do not touch anyone


  • Do not make motions which would draw someone’s attention away from the lesson




  • When behavior is corrected immediately respond with assent (for example, yes, ma’am), and refocus on the lesson.


  • If you don’t feel capable at the moment of saying something with a respectful tone, refrain from saying anything at that moment.


  • Use respectful language with adults and with each other. Do not call the teacher “girl,” or “boi,” smack your lips, or roll your eyes. Look at someone who is addressing you.


  • If you are upset about something, use the proper grievance procedure. The proper grievance procedure is NOT to air grievances during instruction time. I am always willing to listen to what is bothering you provided it is expressed respectfully and at the proper time.


  • You will not like every teacher, and you will not feel respect for every teacher, but you must SHOW respectful behavior to every teacher regardless of how you feel personally.




  • Keep your head up.


  • Note important information/take notes.


  • Track the speaker (whether it is a teacher or another student)


  • Raise your hand to ask questions or to volunteer answers.


  • Try not to let yourself be distracted by others or by things that have happened/are happening outside the classroom. Pay attention.




  • Talk with your classmates ONLY about the assignment before you.


  • Refrain from playing around


  • Ask questions of your classmates and teacher when you get stuck


  • Wait patiently for help without talking or playing. Either try the next problem, ask a classmate to help you, or something else appropriate while you are waiting for the teacher to help you


  • Complete at least 75% of the class work expected of you by the end of the class.


  • Complete ALL of your class work, 100%, by the next morning.



Consequences are as related to the infraction as possible, and include, but are not limited to, the following (in no particular order).


  • Loss of Class Dojo Point(s)
  • Loss of Class Contest Points
  • Extra Writing Assignment
  • Time Out
  • Classroom Detention
  • Text message or email home to parent/guardian
  • Request for parent face-to-face conference
  • Administrative behavior referral for school detention, Saturday school, etc. as principal deems appropriate
